What this practice is for

This practice helps you distinguish between constraints that are real for now, expectations that may be renegotiated, and inner rules you may be reinforcing without noticing.

How long it takes

Plan for fifteen to twenty-five minutes.

Steps

  1. Draw three columns.
  2. Label them: What I can't change right now, What people around me expect, and What I keep telling myself.
  3. In the first column, list the limits you need to work with honestly for now.
  4. In the second, list expectations that feel fixed because other people or systems reinforce them.
  5. In the third, list the rules you keep repeating inwardly.
  6. Put a star beside the item where one small change might open the most possibility without breaking what still needs care.

Reflection question

Which blocker has been acting more permanent than it really is?

Optional group version

Share only the starred item and one small change you could make in response.
